What are MAME update sets and when should I use them?
 

First off, DO NOT download or copy over your existing ROM sets with these ones, they only contain UPDATED ROMs, not the entire ROM set.


With each new MAME version, new ROM sets are added, other sets are changed and furthermore sets are removed.  MAME update sets contain ONLY these new ROMs for you to upgrade your ROM set from a prior MAME version to the latest MAME version.

These ROMs are ONLY useful if you have the FULL MAME ROM set corresponding to the prior version of the update set AND if you have not downloaded any new ROMs for the latest version of MAME yet.

 

The main advantage to these update sets are that you only have to download files you wish to update or you can update the entire previous version to the latest version without any hassle.

 

Example:

You have a full MAME 0.93 ROM set, and you didn't get any of the new MAME 0.94 ROMs yet => you can download ALL ROMs from the 0.93to0.94 update set to get the full MAME 0.94 ROM set.

You have a nearly full MAME 0.93 ROM set and/or you are missing most of new MAME 0.94 ROMs = > you can download the ROMs you are missing from the 0.93to0.94 update set to get a nearly complete 0.94 set, then download the last missing ROMs apart.
 

How to use the sets?

 

You will need at least the following tools:

- ClrMamePro to scan & update your ROMs.

- 2 .exe files from 2 consecutive MAME versions.

 

Now I'm going to explain how to upgrade a full MAME 0.93 ROM set to a full MAME 0.94 ROM set using the appropriate set (0.93to0.94). It would be the same for other consecutive versions.

If it's not already done, make a MAME 0.93 & MAME 0.94 dats in ClrMame's "Profiler" menu. Just enter the path of the MAME executables, choose a dat name (description), select "MAME" as emulator type and finally click on "Create Dat"
 
 

First, make sure you have a FULL MAME 0.93 set.

- Load the "MAME 0.93" dat. Answer "Yes" to all queries.

- Then in the settings menu, add the ROM path where all your MAME ROMs are stored.
 

- Finally go to the Scanner menu and click on the Scan button after setting the options exactly like in the following images.
 

- If the "Scan Results" windows still empty after the scan completes and that you have "Missing ROMs: 0" &"Wrong CRC32s: 0" in the report, that's ok! Otherwise you will be missing ROMs after applying the set.
 
Then upgrade the ROM set
- First of all, download the update ROM sets in a directory, for example E:\mame93to94.  DO NOT copy over your existing ROM sets.
 
 

- Go to the Profiler menu and load the MAME 0.94 dat

 

- In the rebuilder menu, put your Rom path in the "Destination field".
 
 

- Finally go to the scanner menu and start a Scan with the same options than in 1st step, except the "fix unneeded" case that must be unchecked. If you check it, ClrMame may delete some needed ROMs even if the backup option is enabled. This is due to a little flaw in ClrMame's scanner, nobody is perfect.
 


After the scan finishes, check the fix unneeded case then run a 2nd scan by clicking on the "Scan" (NOT Fast Scan!) button.
 


Last step: select all of the new ROMs (in this example, all directories from E:\mame93to94), then drag & drop them in the "Scan Results" window.
 

Now you should have a full MAME 0.94 ROM set.
 

If you are still missing some ROMs at this point, you probably made a mistake somewhere or you initial set was not complete.
